Early Life and Career Beginnings
Growing up, Kelli described herself as shy, though despite this, she was noticed by a talent agent while she was attending a friend’s bar mitzvah, which led to one of her first roles in an Eggo commercial. She attended Thousand Oaks High School, and during her time there was cast in the short film “Architecture of Assurance”, which was released in 2000 to critical acclaim. She also played soccer, and initially wanted to become a professional soccer player before acting roles came her way. After matriculating, she started to gain more roles through short films, before getting a supporting role in the television film “Time Share”. In 2001 she made her film debut in “Bully” in which she plays Heather Swallers, a teenager who becomes entwined in an orchestrated murder of one of her peers. Her next major role would come three years later in the Martin Scorsese film “The Aviator”, playing the role of actress Faith Domergue, having auditioned in front of Scorsese and co-star Leonardo DiCaprio for the role.
In 2005, Garner appeared in the comedy “Man of the House” and the teen drama “Thumbsucker”, which starred Vince Vaughn; the independent film focuses on a teenager coping with his thumb-sucking problem, romance, and a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).
